D-Drops is a blockchain-based game, which means that all the assets that hold or represent value are stored on the blockchain. Blockchain technology is a highly secure and transparent technology that allows for secure value storage.
To build the complete game blockchain technology is not enough and therefore other technologies are necessary to build the D-Drops world.
Ethereum is the leading, widely used, and most secure blockchain out there, and with its recent transition from a proof of work (PoW) to a proof of stake (PoS) consensus protocol as well as future improvements such as the implementation of shard chains Ethereum has set itself up to become scalable and handle vastly more transactions per second. Furthermore, Ethereum is the industry leader in programable blockchain technology backed by a huge community of developers and has proved itself over the years to be a reliable and secure blockchain.
The problem with Ethereum however is the gas fees and slow transaction time. At this point, Ethereum is unable to handle the vast amount of transactions in a reasonable amount of time. For this reason, there has been a surge of new layer 2 improvement protocols that aim to address the aforementioned Ethereum issues as well as new layer 1 protocols such as Ethereum itself which aim to compete with Ethereum. However, most of these so-called "Ethereum killers" are either much less secure, less decentralized, or have the same issues as Ethereum itself.
Currently, the most popular and secure layer 2 protocol is the Polygon (previously known as Matic)protocol. In essence, it is a modified version of the PLASMA protocol where the polygon has introduced a PoS checkpointing layer in combination with Fraud Proofs which ensures decentralization as well as security to the polygon protocol.
Polygon Network currently has over 19,000 dApps that have chosen to build on this blockchain. Polygon is designed to support all different types of projects that includes Defi, Gaming, Social, Exchanges, Art, and more. Many popular platforms and metaverses also have integrated with Polygon like OpenSea, UniSwap, The Sandbox, and Decentraland. Other tops, well-known projects that have built on Polygon include Aavegotchi, Kyber Network, QuickSwap, and Legacy, along with many others.
The Polygon community and Polygon Studios have been actively supporting the emergence of gaming projects in the Polygon ecosystem, also providing grants and onboarding support. For all of these reasons, D-Drops decided that the Polygon ecosystem was a perfect fit.
After careful consideration, we have chosen to use Ethereum to store valuable assets within the D-Drops world such as all the NFT collections and the DOP token. However, to significantly reduce costs the heavy required on-chain game logic is implemented on the polygon PoS side chain. Hence Smart contracts such as the different Treasure Contracts as well as the Manager Contract are all deployed on the polygon PoS side chain.
